I Didn’t Think Samsung Could Top Its Anti-Apple Ads… Until I Saw These

Apple customers are willing to camp out for “the next big thing” — but thankfully no humor is lost. What’s interesting, however, is that Samsung seems to be taking the whole “fanboi” thing a step further by showing off Google’s voice transcription and touting 4G LTE status.
The question of whether or not Samsung can make us laugh is already answered, but can they make us buy their phone? That’s an entirely different question.

Facebook Timeline Now Pushed To Everyone, Users Get A Week To Clean Up Profiles

You can run, but you can’t hide. Facebook’s biggest user interface overhaul since the Wall, theFacebook Timeline, is now becoming mandatory for all users. According to the company, over the next few weeks, everyone will get the new Timeline. And here’s the important part: when you do, you’ll have just seven days to preview what’s there now, and hide anything you don’t want others to see.
In case you’re unfamiliar, the Facebook Timeline makes it far easier for you to travel back through your Facebook posts – posts which normally disappeared off your Wall and into oblivion. The posts from these previous months and years are now accessible through new navigational elements on the right-side of your screen that let you quickly travel back in time to the day you were born.
You can fill in data from your pre-Facebook years using the new status update box, which now includes support for adding a specific year and various “life events.”  These events include things like marriages, births, deaths, new jobs, trips and vacations, new homes, and other things you might want to record in the scrapbook-like Timeline.
With Timeline’s added ability to find older posts, including those from the days before your boss, grandparents, mom and dad were on Facebook, users will need to do a rapid cleanup on their profiles when the Timeline goes live.
Facebook explains how to hide posts you don’t want to appear on your Timeline (click the pencil to hide, delete or edit a post). You can also use the privacy drop-down to change who can see posts (e.g. “Only Me”).

In addition, the company is releasing a new tool today called Activity Log, which is where you can review all your posts and activity, from today back to when you first started using Facebook. Fortunately, only you can see your activity log.

Previously, users had to go out and get Timeline for themselves. Facebook was specifically trying to not push it too hard. It wouldn’t show News Feed stories announcing your friends had migrated, for example, as the company wanted the Timeline to be an opt-in decision that allowed people enough time to moderate their profile posts. Giving users seven days to do the same is somewhat an extension of that thinking, although could prove troublesome for irregular Facebook users who don’t realize they’ve been migrated, leaving themselves exposed when the week is up.
If you want to be proactive and get the Timeline now, go to the Introducing Timeline page and click “Get Timeline.” Or you can wait until you see an announcement at the top of your profile.

New details on the iPhone 5 surface

According to new speculation and insiders, Apple will keep with its iPhone 4S scheduling and release the iPhone 5 this fall. But will it really time the launch so close to a potential iTV debut?
The iPhone 4S isn’t quite as shiny and new as it was a mere month ago, and in the wake of its now-normalcy come new iPhone 5 rumors. Up until now we’ve been able to gather that the next-gen iPhone will sport a new design, larger display, and that it might be a 4G capable.
Now BGR says it has inside information that the iPhone 5 will be launched in the fall of 2012, and that the new phone will not only have a different look but a different feel. According to the site’s sources, the next iPhone will have “rubber or plastic” material built into its case as a new take on the device’s bezel. This will accompany a new aluminum back plate and new antenna system.
Until this point, we’ve heard that the iPhone 5 would be released earlier than the iPhone 4S was, perhaps sticking to Apple’s original summer launch schedule. But if BGR is right, that means Apple might have an incredibly busy third quarter. We heard yesterday that the Apple iTV is supposed to debut in the second or third quarter of 2012, which makes us a bit dubious about this roadmap. The iTV and iPhone 5 launches will be huge, chaos-creating events that the media and consumers will revolve around for weeks. Lump these closely and Apple risks cannibalizing some of that attention.
Of course there will be some consumers that have to choose between an iTV and iPhone 5 – although we’d predict favor would heavily fall to the handset. We don’t expect these two products to launch side-by-side or share the spotlight, and maybe that means we’ll see the iPhone 5 a little earlier than predicted.
As far as the design news goes, the iPhone 5’s form factor has been all over the place since day one. The tear-drop shape rumors persist, and now we can add rubberized bezel and aluminum back plate to the list. It would be a pretty large jump from the current design Apple has follow, and one we can already imagine hearing complaints about.

Ten Brain and Body Management facts

Did you know these ten amazing facts about brain and body?
1. The Brain. The average human brain has about 100 billion nerve cells. This is ten-fold the estimate of twenty years ago. I guess statistical techniques have improved–or we are getting brainier. And nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as over 270 km per hour.
2. Sneezing. Have you ever tried sneezing with your eyes open? It’s supposed to be impossible. When you sneeze, apparently all your bodily functions stop, even your heart. Wow.
3. The Eyes. Look at your left eye in the mirror. Now switch your gaze to the right eye. Did you see you eyes move? The brain’s video circuitry must suppress the blur like that you see when you leave your video camera on and film a blur of sky and shoes. If you go blind in one eye you only lose about one fifth of your vision but all your sense of depth.
4. The Tongue and Speech. It takes the interaction of 72 different muscles to produce human speech. Relative to size, the strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
5. Hair. An average human scalp has 100,000 hairs. OK, I’m below average.
6. Spinal Nerves. The most sensitive cluster of nerves is at the base of the spine. I guess that’s why injuries to the base of the spine are so problematic.
Find the rest of these fascinating irrelevant facts here. And now for some great first-aid tips – the full story is here
7. Painless Injections. Ask to be shown exactly where the needle is going to go. Then squeeze near the spot and you’ll feel it less. Just make a circle with your thumb and forefinger and push down a few seconds before the shot. Apparently, this movement fools nearby nerves, making the injection feel more like a gentle prod. Wow. I can’t wait for my next injection!
8. Relief from Hiccups. Hiccups can be literally a pain. Try this: Take a very deep breath and hold it for about 10 seconds. And then, without exhaling, breathe in more air and hold for another 5 seconds. Then, one more time, breathe in as much air as you can, hold for 5 seconds, and breath out—hopefully no more hiccups.
9. Throat Tickles and sore throats Cure. Tickle something else…your ear to relieve a tickle in the back of your throat. Touching the area around your ear creates a reflex in the throat that eases the annoyance. Terrible Tea made from a little ginger powder, cinnamon and cloves, in the proportion 5-2-1 is an old Ayurveda remedy that gives serious relief. And if you have a sore throat, try gargling with a tea made of hot water and a teaspoon of turmeric.
10. Stuffy Nose Cleared. Your body has a natural mechanism to unclog your nose. Just push your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then press between your eyebrows with a finger. Keep it up for about 20 seconds and your sinuses could start to drain. I’d like to hear your feedback on this. Failing relief, try your local Ayurveda Products (Pretoria)  – or Google for the New Zealand supplier if you are in Australia – for an inexpensive herbal preparation called MA 251. It’s an absolutely astounding remedy from Maharishi Ayurveda, and no side-effects.

Kannada crosswords go online

The website has been developed by a Bangalore-based techie
A novel effort by a Bangalore-based techie has led to Kannada crosswords going online. Launched on Kannada Rajyotsava, earlier this year, the website has become popular on the internet among Kannada crossword lovers.
It has already received 11,000 page views in the last two months. The future plan includes setting crossword websites for various regional languages.

For Rudresh Shetty, who works for an IT company in Bangalore, developing the website — www.indicross.com — started as a hobby. Once Rudresh started working on developing the site, he realised that the already existing Kannada crosswords available online failed to allow users to interact with the crossword (or ‘Padabandha’).

Realising this, Rudresh developed a software which allows users to enter their choice of Kannada words directly onto the website using the existing keyboard and without the use of any additional softwares.

He used the transliteration tool provided by Google to translate each letter typed in English into its Kannada equivalent. For those stuck on a clue, a click on the empty box in the crossword reveals the letter. Then you can get back to cracking the crossword. Until now about 60 crosswords have been uploaded and Rudresh is trying to tie up with more newspapers so that their crosswords can be read online.

Rudresh said, “The advantage for the newspapers is that under each crossword the name of the publication with a link to their website would be displayed. This is a way of encouraging people to read newspapers and popularise Kannada.”

The next stage is to ask people to create crosswords and make them build it and share them with their friends. It is being tested as of now and would go live within two-three weeks, he added. Rudresh said he is in discussions with Kannada Sahitya Parishat, so that the software he has developed can be integrated with the rest of the Kannada blogs.

With development of a database of crosswords underway, the time isn’t far when people can choose crosswords from their favourite newspaper and start solving it online. “In future, we  hope that newspapers will give indicross.com their crosswords one day after it is published. Then a large number of people living across the world can use this website to solve their favourite crosswords,” he added.

‘Padabandha Brahma’ A N Prahlad Rao, PRO with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board who holds a Guiness record in devising Kannada crosswords and provides crosswords to various newspapers, said developing such an online application would definitely be useful for readers spread across the world. “Until now it was available only in newspapers and magazines, but now even if you leave the country, you can get to solve Kannada crosswords online,” he added.

A software that speaks their language

BANGALORE: For the visually-impaired students of Bangalore University, lessons will become a tad easier as soon thanks to Shreedhar TS. The 23-year-old visually impaired lad from Karnataka has come up with an innovative idea which will benefit visually-impaired students whose mother tongue is Kannada.

Shreedhar, a second year degree student of Karnataka State Open University has incorporated Kannada script in 'Text to Speech' software, used by the visually-impaired.

The outcome: they can now convert their lessons from English to Kannada without any hassle.

"Text to Speech is a software that converts the text on computer into voice. Although the software was available since the past two decades, visually-impaired students with Kannada as their mother tongue had many limitations as the language was not a part of the software. We had only Hindi and Tamil incorporated, as far as Indian languages are concerned," said Shreedhar.
Shreedhar came up with the idea after he himself faced difficulty. "It was the need of the hour. It has and will benefit many visually impaired. I know people who have started writing blogs after they used the revised software. I am happy that the software will now be used at the Louie Braille Centre coming up at the Central College campus," he said.

Vice Chancellor N Prabhu Dev announced that the software will be used at the new centre for visually impaired that will come up at the Central College Campus in next one month.
But Shreedhar also feels that a lot more advancement is needed to make the lives of the visually impaired more comfortable. "The Optical Character Recognition Software is a vital technology that is not yet available in India. I am also working on mobile phone software that will act as Kannada reader for android phones and phones that support software," said Shreedhar.
203rd birth anniversary of Louie Braille
It is the magic of six dots and six bumps that has transformed the world of blinds into a better one. What are they? A jumble of words, numbers, alphabets or a revolutionary script? Braille has transfigured the world of thousands of visually challenged to a great extent. Celebrating the contribution of the great soul, the National Federation of the Blind observed the 203{+r}{+d} birth anniversary of Louie Braille on Wednesday at the Central College Campus.

The event was marked by the recognition of visually impaired students across Karnataka, who scored more than 80 % in SSLC and PUC examinations. The federation also announced its national scholarship for Karnataka. The scholarship is provided to most needed and meritorious visually challenged students of graduation and post graduation across the country.
In light of a judgment passed by the high court, the federation also pronounced that all visually impaired persons with more than 75 % disability will now be eligible for regular BEd courses, unlike till the last academic session.
